Situated on the Palisadoes sandspit at the western end of Jamaica, Port Royal had gained a reputation in the 17th century as both the "richest and wickedest city in the world". It was notorious for its gaudy displays of wealth and loose morals, and was a popular place for pirates to bring and spend their treasure. | |||||
| During part of the 17th century the British actively encouraged and even paid Buccaneers based at Port Royal to attack Spanish and French shipping. Admirals lord Nelson and Benbow, the chilling Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, were among its inhabitants. The town flourished for 32 years until June 7, 1692 when it was partially buried in the sea by an earthquake. | |||||||

The Rio Grande is located in Portland. The Rio Grande River is one of Jamaica's largest rivers and has been used to transport produce, especially bananas, from the interior of the island for many years. Rafting for fun was introduced by legendary Hollywood star, Errol Flynn, who made Port Antonio his home.
The journey will take you on a river of adventure - under towering bamboo arches, past fern-shrouded groves, over rippling shoals and through a narrow passageway of moss-covered stone known as Lovers Rock. The tranquil sounds of nature blend with the splash of the raftman's pole as he skillfully navigates the rivers course. |

The Blue Lagoon is located in Port Antonio. Be hypnotized by its constantly changing shades of blue due to the intermingling of sun and shade. Believed to be bottomless, the Blue Lagoon has an estimated depth of 282 ft. at its deepest point. | |||||

On Pegg Point, at the mouth of Turtle Crawle Harbour is the Trident Castle, an 8-bedroom castle measuring 7 acres on a peninsula (3 sides water). People can rent the 40,000 sq.ft. Castle, a 22 ft. banquet table that seats 30 people, a pool, a helicopter pad and even a private chapel for weddings. There are also villas for more people down a private pathway, a block and a half from the Castle. During the Spanish colonisation of Jamaica, this bay was named Puerto Escondido (Hidden Harbour). The Palace was built for a German baroness. | ||||||

Devon House was built in 1881 by George Stiebel, a Jamaican. Acquired by the Jamaican Government in 1967, Devon House is protected by the National Heritage Trust. The magnetic appeal of Devon House is the beautifully restored rooms, with their antique furniture and lovely decorations, the shops selling Jamaican craft items, and restaurants serving authentic Jamaican food. |

Shaw Park Botanical Gardens is owned by the Shaw Park Beach Hotel. The original area was an estate named after the family of Elizabeth, Ann and John Shaw who were owners until 1811. The property was the site for the final battles for Jamaica between the Spanish and the English.
Overlooking the Bay of Ocho Rios, the Gardens embrace 25 acres of tropical splendour. A waterfall that cascades down a rocky course with many plant specimens on all sides. Lush tropical trees form bowers with flamboyant blossoms every month of the year. |
